This contemplative prayer station allows people to identify things that they allow to control their life (Idols) and then to smash it in the presence of God.
Directions for Leadership:
Set up a table and chairs with good lighting and lots and lots of clay or playdoh. Also print up and place the directions below around the table. If you need a lot of playdoh I recommend you make it using this recipe, as it will save a lot of money:
2 cups of colored water
1 Tbsp. of cooking oil
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup of salt
Directions: Place all of the ingredients in a pan. Cook slowly on medium-high and stir it until the playdoh thickens, then kneed on a table for a few minutes (will be very hot, so be careful). Keep the finished playdoh in a plastic container.
Prayer Station Instructions:
Take a moment to quiet yourself and acknowledge Gods presence in this space with you.
Think about what you have let control your life. What is it that is a huge deciding factor in the decisions you make daily. This idol could be anything from an object (like money), to a person, to a thing (like school or work) or ideal. It is said that the things you would be willing to die for are most likely also what you worship without realizing it. If that thing, object, ideal, or person is anything other than God, then it is an idol.
Using the clay on the table, make a symbol or representation of an idol in your life.
When done, ask God to forgive you and to help you trust God as your Government, King, and Master. Then smash the idol you made out of clay. Don’t be afraid to bang away!
Scriptures:
Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. -1 Samuel 13:21
For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. -Psalm 96:5
What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” -2 Corinthians 6:16
